Air Corps:
In early 1941 Zamperini joined
the Army Air Corps but due to extreme air sickness he signed papers
and left to become a movie extra. In September 1941 he joined the army. He was forced to rejoin
the Army Air Corps for his future service. Zamperini was sent to Ellington Field in Houston Texas to
become a bombardier, meaning he sighted targets and released bombs, on a B-24 Liberator he and his
crew named Superman. Zamperini had a few successful missions in the Air Corps. One was a
mission to retake the small island of Nauru off the coast of Hawaii. Louis made a guess on a bomb drop
and connected on a Japanese fuel depot. After the hit Superman and nine other bombers began taking
heavy fire from Japanese planes, Zeros. Superman was severely damaged and lost its landing gear.
Zamperini came up with the idea to slow the plane with parachutes. The damage was irreparable . His
crew would be moved to a new plane, the Green Hornet.
